Ferric nitrate is an inorganic chemical compound that is a corrosion inhibitor. It is soluble in water, acetone, and alcohol. It is a pale violet crystalline powder.it is a non-flammable chemical compound. It forms a yellow solution when dissolved in a process called hydrolysis. Ferric nitrate structure appears as octahedral crystals. This nitrate salt will accelerate the burning of combustible materials. Prolonged submission of the material to fire results in an explosion. Toxic oxides of nitrogen are produced in fires involving this material. When it is near to boiling, nitric evaporates from the solution, and all the iron will precipitate as ferric oxide.
Its solutions are corrosive to most metals. Combustion products that are formed in the fire include toxic oxides of nitrogen and nitric acid vapors.
Ferric nitrate behaves as an oxidizing agent. Its mixtures with alkyl esters may explode, owing to the formation of alkyl nitrates. Ferric nitrate mixtures with phosphorus, tin chloride, or other reducing agents also react explosively.
CAS NO :- 7782-61-8
It is used in the synthesis of sodium amide from a solution of sodium in ammonia.
