Ammonium Bisulphate

Ammonium hydrogen sulfate is an inorganic chemical compound that is a colorless to white, powdered solid. This ammonium salt is toxic by ingestion. When heated to high temperatures, it emits toxic sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide fumes. It is soluble in water and is the product of the half-neutralization of sulfuric acid by ammonia. It is a chemical catalyst, used in hair preparations.

It has its other names as acid ammonium sulfate; ammonium hydrogen sulfate; mono-ammonium salt of sulfuric acid; ammonium bisulfate. It is noncombustible but is corrosive to aluminum. It is a very irritant to skin and mucous membranes. It is hazardous to skin absorption. This sulfate salt is soluble in methanol. It is practically not soluble in acetone. Inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact with material results in severe injury or even death. Its contact with molten substances causes severe burns to the skin and eyes. Fire is produced in some reactions.

Ammonium bisulfite reacts with oxidizing agents to generate heat and products that may be flammable, combustible, or otherwise reactive. In this reaction, it works as an inorganic reducing agent itself. Their reactions with oxidizing agents are violent. Sulfites and hydrosulfites (dithionites) also react explosively with strong oxidizing agents. It has a specific gravity as Specific Gravity: 2.03 at 20C.

USES AND APPLICATIONS FOR AMMONIUMBISULPHATE

Here are some of the uses given below: –

  • It reduces carbonyl and alcohol groups.
  • It is utilized in bleaching mechanical paper pulp, cotton, and wool.
  • Additional uses include as a preservative and a hair waving agent.
  • It is commonly served in a water solution.
  • It aids in fertilizer, and water treatment.
  • It serves as a non-pesticidal chemical.
  • It is used to form ammonium sulfate industrially.

It works as a weaker alternative to sulfuric acid, although sodium bisulfate is much more common in such types of reactions.
