Calcium Hydroxide [Ca (OH)2] is an inorganic compound with a colorless appearance in crystalline form and a white powdery appearance in solid form. It is commonly referred to as slaked lime. Submission to this compound in an unprotected environment can prove fatal to humans. This is an ionic compound with its other names as, quick lime, caustic lime, pickling lime, and hydrated lime, etc.

USES AND APPLICATIONS FOR CALCIUM HYDROXIDE
  • It operates as a pH modifier due to its basic properties.
  • It is used as an ingredient in many plastics.
  • This reacts with CO2 thus reactions called carbonation, and sugarcane is processed via carbonation.
  • In dental clinics, this compound is used to fill cavities of human teeth. However, the procedure is called a root canal.
  • It is used in hair care products.
  • It is also used in the manufacturing of ebonite and pesticides.
  • It is used in cement, plaster, and other paving materials.
PREPARATION

It is produced by the reaction of a solution of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide. It can simply be prepared by the reaction of calcium oxide with water.

  • It is not flammable.
  • It has a refractive index of 1.57 alpha, 1.54 beta.
  • Its vapor pressure is 0mmHg.
  • It is accelerated by the presence of water.

It may act as a local buffer against acidic reactions.
