Copper Sulphate is an inorganic compound with its other names as cupric sulfate (CuSO4) and cuprous sulfate (Cu2SO4). It is an essential mineral and is also referred to as blue vitriol, and bluestone. Its common form is heptahydrate which is blue in color. Its anhydrous form is a white to off-white powder. This compound molecule consists of an ionic bond between the copper cation and the sulfate anion.
Both hydrated and anhydrous copper sulfates tend to decompose on heating. When decomposition occurs, this salt emits toxic fumes of sulfur oxide and cupric oxide. It appears as orthorhombic crystals (anhydrous form) and triclinic crystals (heptahydrate form). It is soluble in water and methanol but not soluble in ethanol and acetone. It decomposes slightly at above 200°C. it is a hygroscopic solid and found as a corrosion product on bronze sculptures. Copper Sulphate cannot be stored in metal containers as it is highly corrosive to steel, iron, and galvanized pipes. It is a strong acid as it hydrolyses in water to give cupric hydroxide which is a weak base. It is not flammable and reacts with magnesium to produce flammable and explosive hydrogen gas. It is toxic by ingestion and causes severe eye irritation.
