MAGNESIUM NITRATE

Magnesium nitrate is a hygroscopic inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg (NO3)2Magnesium nitrate can be found in the earth’s crust, as its hexa-hydrate form, like nitro magnesite salt; that is a rare mineral form of magnesium nitrate. It is a highly water-soluble compound.

By heating, another hexa-hydrate salt does not give anhydrous magnesium nitrate, and it needs to manufacture in the laboratory.

Magnesium nitrate can be manufactured in the laboratory by following processes. The reaction of magnesium oxide with nitric acid used to manufacture magnesium nitrate. In this reaction, magnesium carbonate can take the place of magnesium oxide. The chemical reaction of magnesium oxide, carbonate, or hydroxide with nitric acid gives magnesium nitrate. Then, evaporation and crystallization follow it. There are various methods to manufacture magnesium nitrate, and then impurities can be separated by subsequent filtration.

Dehydrating agent for the manufacturing and purification of concentrate nitric acid use magnesium nitrate. That is an essential component for producing fertilizer, explosive, and especially organic compounds. This application takes almost 70-80% of the total production of magnesium nitrate. Fireworks and petrochemicals use magnesium nitrate as an activator.

Its application includes manufacturing building material, agricultural products, printing, mining, toners, colorant products, chemicals, and ceramics industries. Because of the high content of nitrogen and magnesium, it has used in fertilizers.

Magnesium nitrate is a fire intensify compound because it is an oxidant by nature. On heating, it releases fumes of nitrogen oxide that can lead to violent combustion. I can damage skin and eyes and irritate them. On ingestion and inhalation; can cause vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, and convulsions.
