Sodium Acetate

Sodium acetate is a chemical compound and also known as sodium ethanoate. The dry form of sodium acetate is called sodium anhydrous; means lack of hydration. In its powder granular, it appears as monoclinic crystals. Sodium acetate is both water and alcohol-soluble; and an odorless inorganic compound. It is most probably present in plant and animal tissues. Usually, it is an odorless compound. On heating to its decomposition point, it smells like vinegar and acetic acid.

Sodium acetate is an inexpensive compound and purchased instead of being synthesized. The chemical reaction of acetic acid with sodium carbonate with 5-8% of the solution; or with sodium hydroxide used to manufacture sodium acetate. In industrial, sodium acetate trihydrate can be prepared in the chemical reaction of acetic acid with sodium hydroxide; while using water as the solvent. While preparing sodium acetate taking safety precautions is necessary because splashing can happen and cause irritation of the skin and eyes.

Sodium acetate can cause damage if inhaled and cause swelling of the throat and lungs.

The application of sodium acetate is increasing surprisingly in the industry all over the globe. The demand for both forms of sodium acetate (tri-hydrate and anhydrous) is driving the market with time. Sodium acetate has a wide range of applications in the industry. The leather and textile industry has applications for sodium acetate. In the food industry, food seasoning uses sodium acetate.  Sodium acetate is the main ingredient for preparing heating pads, hands warmer, and hot ice.
