Sodium Metabisulphite

Sodium Meta bisulfite (SMBS) is an inorganic compound known as sodium pyro-sulfite or “disodium meta bisulfite.” SMBS is a sulfur-containing ionic compound, and it is a yellowish-white powder in a normal state. SMBS has a pungent odor like sulfur dioxide. It is a well-known antioxidant that medicine and pharmaceuticals use it. It is also known for its preservative nature because it controls bacteria growth. SMBS is an essential disinfectant and used in many products. Its chemical formula is Na2S2O5.

SMBS consists of an SO2 group attached to an SO3 group with a negative charge on the SO3 side.

SMBS is safe to use and has a less toxic nature, but it can be dangerous for people allergic to sulfites. Sodium Meta Bisulfite is harmless for human skin; therefore, make-up or skincare products use SMBS on a large scale. Because it increases the shelf life of the product and also harmless to the skin, because of its disinfectant nature, many antibacterial products like soap, detergents, and sanitizers use SMBS. As sanitizers are in demand nowadays, SMBS is one of the most selling compounds as it is a main ingredient of sanitizer. Sodium Meta Bisulfite SMBS is being manufactured in every country worldwide due to its vast application in every industry. It is also used in meat processing to stop bacteria growth on meat and increase the shelf life of processed meat like sausages.

All of the above is easy to use and non-hazardous to human health because it has non-combustible nature; it doesn’t catch fire, but at high-temperature, SMBS releases toxic flames of oxides of sulfur which cause suffocation and harmful for human lungs.
