SULFAMIC ACID

Sulfamic acid is a molecular chemical compound commonly named as Amidosulphuric acid, amino Sulfonic acid, Amidosulfonic acid, and Amidosulphuric acid. It is a colorless compound and finds many uses. Moreover, it is a water-soluble compound. It is a sand-like crystalline solid and neutralized by adding dilute hydroxide. It is also used for cleaning metals. It is a combustible compound.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Its appearance is a white and crystalline powder. It has an orthorhombic crystal structure. It is soluble in MeOH and water by hydrolysis.  On decomposing, it emits toxic fumes of hydrogen chloride and Sulphur oxide. It is stable in dry form. It is not soluble in hydrocarbons. It is a strong and inorganic acid as solid is not hygroscopic. Sulfamic acid is non-volatile. It is an odorless solid. It is an acidic compound. Sulfamic acid is partially soluble in acetone.

PREPARATION

When Sulphuric acid is heated with urea, we obtained Sulphamic acid. It can be prepared by treating chlorosulfonic acid and ammonia. In the laboratory, its formulation involves direct sulfonation of benzenesulfonic acid.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
  • It reacts with nitric acid and other acids too.
  • Its heat of combustion 1.53×10+7 J/kmol
  • Its heat of formation is -6.749X10+8 J/kmol.
  • Sulphamic acid solutions are less corrosive than HCl and Sulphuric acid.
  • Its aqueous solutions are highly ionized.
  • It forms diammonium sulfate ions when hydrolyses slowly in solution.
  • It also reacts with some bases.
